115 Artists supported the exhibit with amazingly cool, dark and devilish artworks. Thousands of guests attended the exhibit which ran concurrent with 100 Artists See God at Laguna Art Museum. A major book was published in conjunction with Last Gasp Publishing.

"100 Artists See Satan: The Fundraiser is a fundraiser thinly disguised as an exhibition.
The fundraiser is a devilishly-conceived-to-raise-money spin-off of the critically acclaimed 2004 GCAC exhibition and publication 100 Artists See Satan.
Unlike the original exhibition in this version all the art will be for sale with proceeds supporting the art center.
To raise even more money, the Forum has arranged for Grammy award-winning graphic and packaging designer, Hugh Brown to design Satan’s Credit Card. 666 of these cards will be sold for $50 each (the 666th card, however, will be sold for a hell of a lot of money).

This exhibition highlights the thirty-seven year history of BC Space. As much a mental space as it is a physical space, BC-representing the initials of founders Jerry Burchfield and Mark Chamberlain-is the oldest established gallery in Orange County. Located on the second floor above a commercial storefront on Forest Avenue in downtown Laguna Beach, BC Space began as a commercial photo lab and studio. Through the dedication of Chamberlain and Burchfield, this high quality photo lab soon transformed into a scarcely-for-profit art gallery, performance hall, public meeting place and a headquarters for community documentation projects and social activism. The most famous project to emerge from BC Space is the 15 phase, three decade long Laguna Canyon Project - which garnered national media attention including Life magazine and national TV coverage, involved thousands of Southern California residents, and ultimately saved the canyon from development.

BC Space: Mything in Action features artwork by forty five artists who exhibited at the gallery over the past four decades and helped advance the reputation of BC Space as a venue for artists engaging in often controversial ideas. The exhibition will document the substantial role BC Space played in Southern California promoting photography as a fine art medium and ambitious projects such as the Laguna Canyon Project and Legacy Project, documenting the transformation of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into the Great Park of Orange County.

The OC Weekly weighed in the the current Grand Central show, "Hidden Wounds, Paper Bullets", on view through Jan 10.
Says the Weekly:
"Martyrdom is the ungainly focus of Grand Central Art Center’s downer of an exhibition, “Hidden Wounds, Paper Bullets: Iranian Contemporary Art.”
Elizabeth Little’s curator notes state the show isn’t about “politics” or “religion,” but “people.”
In a reductive way, she’s correct: “Hidden Wounds” is about individuals, but the artists on display have also been shaped by their homeland’s ongoing religious battle for their hearts and souls. The exhibition is much more about religion than it is about people and—more tragically—how religion has infected politics."

"In an ink-stained freelancer's cluttered home office far, far away, there was a critic who thought he knew everything there was to know about art. He'd studied Inside the White Cube: The Idealogy of the Gallery Space, subscribed to Artforum, knew the difference between an installation and an exhibition, worshiped at the no-nonsense feet of Coagula Art Journal, took classes, could appreciate performance art, and even watched all four seasons of Art In the 21st Century on PBS. Then along came artist Hugh Brown and his goddamn chain-saw "collection" at Grand Central Art Center Gallery—for which Brown created spot-on homages to the styles of such well-known artists as Andy Warhol and Georgia O'Keefe, only with chain saws somehow incorporated into each "lost work" by the master in question—and all of that knowledge and hard work was for naught. Said critic is currently plotting his unholy revenge."

The NYT featured a recent article on Sandow Birk and his work titled 'Personal Meditations on the Koran.

Says the article: The first exhibitions of Mr. Birk’s “American Qur’an,” a work-on-paper series that is roughly a third complete, is about to open: 30 hand-painted pages at Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco starting on Thursday and another 30 at Koplin Del Rio gallery in Culver City starting Friday.

On the Koplin Del Rio site the press release says: "Over the past decade Birk has traveled extensively through the Islamic world, visiting several of the most populous Muslim nations as well as studying important collections of Islamic artworks. It was these travels, along with political events across the world that inspired his initial interest in Islam and the Qur’an.

Began over four years ago, Birk’s most recent series of work, American Qur’an, is an endeavor to transcribe the entire Qur’an according to Islamic traditions and illuminate the text with scenes from contemporary American life."

Grand Central has been a huge Sandow Birk supporter for years.

Greg Escalante Quoted In LA Times

In an article in LAT regarding lowbrow art's relationship to the surf industry, Grand Central Art Forum President Greg Escalante was quoted extensively.

Says the article:
"Greg Escalante, co-founder and curator of lowbrow art bible Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine, emphasizes the heavy overlap between the surf and art worlds -- something that other surf-skate brands such as RVCA (closely associated with the Beautiful Losers art crew) and Vans have also tapped into. "A lot of surfers make art, and if they don't make it, they appreciate it," he says.
In the same way that pro skateboarders and surfers traditionally have been sponsored by brands, these days so are the artists connected with the scene, via apparel and sneaker collaborations, in-store commissions and such. The underlying message is evident: In alternative sports, art is way cooler than advertising.

Titans of the punk, lowbrow and street art realms such as Ron English, Winston Smith, Robert Williams, Alex Pardee, Todd Schorr, and rock photographer Lisa Johnson have all recently partnered with Hurley for limited-edition T-shirt collections.
Last summer Hurley (the company) underwrote "In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor," a massive group show at the Laguna Art Museum that presented the work of 150 lowbrow artists who have been championed by the magazine, acknowledging and tracing a movement that the mainstream gallery scene has so often shunned. Underwriting the show was "ambitious and costly," says Escalante, and highlighted the company's commitment to lowbrow. "This show wasn't even surf-related," Escalante points out. "They were simply supporting a school of art that embodies their spirit."

The van Gogh of the Gross-Out

The NY Times ran an article on Basil Wolverton recently.
It's about time.

GCAC showed Basil's work back in 2007.

Says the Times: "His specialty was a beyond-grotesque species of fictional portraiture, typified by the dog-toothed, bushy-browed, linguine-haired “Beautiful Girl of the Month” seen on the cover of Mad’s 1954 takeoff on Life magazine. The images in pen and ink — Wolverton worked almost exclusively in this medium — were a virtuoso exercise in bad taste, made all the weirder for being so meticulously executed.

And it is worth adding that most of the late-20th- and early-21st-century artists obviously influenced by Wolverton are men. On that long list I would count Peter Saul, Gary Panter, Kenny Scharf, Jim Nutt, Robert Williams, Jim Shaw, Mike Kelley, Jeffrey Valance, R. Crumb and Cameron Jamie, who organized the Gladstone show from the collection of the Wolverton patron and fan Glenn Bray."

It is worth noting that Grand Central has shown many of these artists as well.

Eugenie Goldschmeding Recent work at GCAC don't miss it!

Eugenie Goldschmeding was the most recent artist in residence at the Grand Central Art Center. Her work featured in the Project Room is a dreamlike installation of mixed media paintings and sculpture.

Says the review:
"Brown’s mastery of a multitude of art forms—David Levinthal-like photos of toys, a Pollock painting to go with the front window display, the Mapplethorpe photos or surreal fur-lined sculpture à la Oppenheim—is damn cool.
But this isn’t cheap parody. If anything, it highlights the idea that style is empty. That it can be stolen and replicated by anyone with the talent to do so. Even more, when we go to a museum, we may be told we’re seeing the real thing, but how do we really know?"

Allegedly...Some Information You Should Know About Hugh Brown and This Exhibition

I have heard a number of rumors about this exhibition Allegedly: The Hugh Brown Chainsaw Collection. I have heard that Brown discovered a little known anomaly: dozens of celebrated artists throughout the twentieth century have, for some inexplicable reason, created artworks that include images of or make reference to chainsaws. Upon this discovery Brown began buying all such images he could find to put together the collection on view here. I find this scenario the least plausible of any explanation I have heard.

Another explanation is that upon learning about Brown’s penchant for contemporary art and chainsaws, several unscrupulous art dealers plotted to defraud him. These dealers hired expert forgers to meticulously produce “chainsaw” artworks by famous artists. While I find this explanation more likely then the former, there is another explanation that I find even more likely:

Hugh Brown created this hoax!

After meeting Brown and speaking to him on several occasions, I would not be surprised to learn that any of the above explanations are true. However, for a number of reasons, I believe Brown is responsible for this deception.

Brown has the experience and background to accurately fabricate work by other artists. He was an award winning Creative Director at Rhino Records from 1997 to 2008—he won three Grammys and a host of other awards. He was well-known for his inventive sculptural CD-compilation box sets.

But why would Brown go to such trouble? Appropriation has always been a part of the art world. As Picasso put it, “great artist steal” (the implication being that lesser artists only borrow). Duchamp drew a mustache on a reproduction of the Mona Lisa. Shortly after the beginning of pop art, a blatant phenomenon of wholesale replication of art emerged in the 60s and pretty much peeked in the late 70s and early 80s. But these artists were ripping off other artists to make high-minded statements about perception and commodification of art. None of these artists included chainsaws in their art; they would have found this gratuitous at best. I don’t think Brown’s motives here are that lofty.

Brown strikes me more as someone who’s trying to throw a monkey wrench—I guess that should be chainsaw—into the whole art world star system. I don’t think this is malicious. I believe Brown genuinely likes the artists whom are, one way or another, exploited in this show. He also likes chainsaws.

In any event, in this exhibition we get to see passionately constructed artworks that if not created by famous artists look so much like their art that it begs the question: What’s the difference? And we have to wonder: What’s with the chainsaws?

Santa Ana - On May 2nd, 2009, The CSUF Grand Central Art Center presents Allegedly: The Hugh Brown Chainsaw Collection. Artist Hugh Brown brings together an astounding collection of artwork forgeries: a who’s who of contemporary artists including; Ed Ruscha, Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari, Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorp, Barbara Kruger, Roy Lichenstien, Diane Arbus, Jackson Pollock and many more, all meticulously crafted but with a strange twist… Chainsaws!
For the last eleven years Hugh Brown has been the Creative Director of Rhino Records, the best known and most successful archival and reissue design label in the world. His groundbreaking designs have garnered eleven packaging and design Grammy nominations and three wins. He has won over fifty other awards from Print Magazine, I.D. Magazine, Communication Arts, AIGA, and many others.
Hugh has been a working artist for 35 years specializing in photography, printmaking and assemblage. He has had seven solo shows and been in many group shows including two at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and three at the Triton Museum of Art. One of his proudest moments was his second place finish in the "Design a chair for Barbie" Competition sponsored by Vitra Design Museum, Metropolis Magazine, Mattell and W, not because of the second place finish but because the entry caused a fist fight among the judges.

Eugenie Goldschmeding: Recent Work

Grand Central Art Center is pleased to have Eugenie Goldschmeding as its 36th international Artist in Residence. Goldschmeding creates an installation of biomorphic forms and strikingly elegant drawings on paper. She is widely exhibited throughout Europe in solo exhibitions and has participated in group shows across the United States and abroad. In 2006 she began the first of two residencies in Paris, France and has been the recipient of four grants. Her recent works at the Grand Central Art Center mark Goldscmendig’s first solo exhibition in the U.S. Originally from the Netherlands, Goldschmeding currently lives and works in Paris.
Lectures and open studio visits to be announced.

Rat Powered Films is proud to present "RATS IS A FOUR-LETTER WORD" film fest at the Yost Theater in Downtown Santa Ana.

“Rats is a Four-Letter Word” is a diverse collection of short documentaries, dramas, comedies and animation with several of the filmmakers having more than one contribution.

Santa Ana-based Akorn Productions gives us four excerpts from the feature length “Primer” highlighting local artists, historians, and all-around characters.

Michael Mohan’s three works from the “Interrogation” series deal with a misguided high school guidance counselor. A more comedic entry, from the “You Can Awesome” series about, again, misguided personalities, this time in the form of kids TV show hosts.

The shows two lengthiest productions at about ten minutes each are Matthew Lessner’s “Darling, Darling” featuring a young Michael Cera in very strange circumstances and Brent Green’s even stranger animated film “Hadacol Christmas.”

Maurice Chauvet’s “Three-Fifty” is a comedy about an Orwellian video store. A Rat Powered favorite, Jim Munroe’s “My Trip to Liberty City” is a humorous, Canadian take on the videogame Grand Theft Auto. Bob loves T. Arthur Cottam’s “Dirty Words: The Letter C,” Amy… not so much.

Admission is free; donations are welcome.

Cal State Fullerton Theatre Majors Win National Awards
Pairs Make History at Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival

Cal State Fullerton theatre arts majors won the top two acting awards, plus a major design prize presented during at the 41st annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. The weeklong theatrical showcase and competition in Washington, D.C., ended Sunday.

It’s the first time in the history of the Irene Ryan Scholarship auditions that students from a single university won both national titles.

Judges selected graduate students Meredith Hinckley of Santa Ana (with acting partner Paul Collins of Santa Ana) and Adam Navarro of Costa Mesa (with partner Courtney Howe of Rancho Santa Margarita) from CSUF’s Department of Theatre and Dance for the two $2,500 national Irene Ryan fellowships. The awards recognize their work in campus productions of “The Night of the Iguana” and “As You Like It,” respectively.

In a separate award, Howe was named “Best Partner” in the Irene Ryan Competition.

In addition, CSUF’s Joseph Holbrook of Buena Park, won the Barbizon Award for Theatrical Design Excellence in Scenic Design for his designs for the campus production of “Urinetown the Musical.” The honor includes a $500 honorarium and all-expenses-paid trip to New York City for the National Design Portfolio Review at Lincoln Center, as well as a professional development residency.

The students secured their place at the national festival during the regional competition held in February at Cal State Fullerton. The Region VIII festival attracted 1,500 students from universities throughout the West.

“We are so proud,” said James R. Taulli, associate professor of theatre and dance who chaired the Region VIII festival. “It’s astonishing that of the thousands of participating Irene Ryan Acting students and Barbizon Design students from throughout the nation, that three of the national winners would come from California State University, Fullerton.”

In further recognition, Hinckley also won the Classical Acting Award of Excellence, which includes a two-week internship at Canada’s prestigious Shaw Festival. She also received Utah’s highly coveted Sundance Theatre Lab Acting Fellowship, for a three-week workshop in July.

Navarro, meanwhile, also received the Voice And Speech Trainers Association scholarship, as well as a yearlong internship at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.

In the design arena — in addition to Hollbrook’s award — CSUF’s Latasha Tobias of Rancho Cucamonga received the O’Neill Institute Internship for the summer, as well as an invitation to attend the Broadway Master Lighting Class in New York in May. Tobias is pursing a master of fine arts degree in art-illustration.

Susan Hallman, chair and professor of theatre and dance, characterized the abundance of CSUF awards as “a remarkable achievement and testimony to the quality of our students, faculty, staff and institutional support.”

The history-making showing for Cal State Fullerton at the national festival comes on the heels of the university celebrating the naming of the Clayes Performing Arts Center, in recognition of a $5 million gift to the College of the Arts from the estate of Joseph Clayes III. The former student body president and member of the Class of ’61, was a patron of the arts.

The Barbizon Awards provide student designers with feedback from professionals working in the field, give outstanding student designers national recognition and provide the opportunity for student designers to exhibit their work at the Kennedy Center.

The Irene Ryan Scholarships provide recognition, honor and financial assistance to outstanding student performers wishing to pursue further education.

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, launched in 1969, is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide. It has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of the nation’s college theater programs. The program has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country.

If you watch TV, it's hard to imagine that you haven't seen those Wienerschnitzel commercials featuring The Delicious One - the little hot dog that goes running around the streets, chased by people who want nothing more than to gobble him up. And few people know that little guy better than Gothold.

WHAT YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE DELICIOUS ONE CAMPAIGN: TDO, as we refer to him, has become a part of pop culture. There are toys and antenna toppers, stickers, children's books, calendars and life-size costumes so he can appear at public events.

The Wienerschnitzel commercials lead a very active afterlife on the Internet, and he has become a topic for college professors in states that don't even have our restaurants. Whenever I tell folks that we have the Wienerschnitzel account, they usually say, "Oh, I love that little running hot dog guy!"

The Delicious One has made the transition from advertising to being an object of desire. It doesn't get too much better than that in our business.

WHAT YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB: I get my greatest satisfaction from working with other talented people on a common goal and seeing what we come up with. I'm proud to have been one of the original creators of TDO, but it was a team effort all the way. I really don't feel that anything I might have done on my own is as great as the things I have come up with as part of a very talented team at DGWB. I just love the spark that happens when great minds collide; there's nothing quite like it.

FAVORITE TV COMMERCIAL AND WHY: One of my favorite commercials of all time is the Apple 1984 commercial, which introduced the Macintosh computer. Although I had nothing to do with creating that spot, I did help play a role in getting it on the Super Bowl.

At the time, I was working for an event marketing company in Los Angeles, and we had the Apple account. We were responsible for the introduction of the Macintosh to the Apple sales force at the end of 1983. We did all the staging and creative elements that would be shown to the sales force and the trade show prior to the consumer launch. Steve Jobs had been the driving force behind the 1984 TV spot and wanted to use it as the launch spot for consumers, but he was getting tremendous pushback from the other top brass at Apple because it didn't show the product - your classic advertising stalemate.

Together with Jobs, we worked up a scheme. Jobs got the naysayers at Apple to agree to a bet: If he could get the sales force to support the spot at the role-out, then Apple would agree to run it during the Super Bowl. They took the bet.

The day came. Jobs got up on stage and whipped the crowd into a frenzy with one of his most impassioned speeches ever. Then we dimmed the lights and ran the spot. Before the commercial was finished, a spotlight went on, and we slowly lowered a Macintosh computer from the ceiling above the audience. We had it rigged up so that it was turned on, and you could hear its mechanical voice saying "Hello. My name is Macintosh."

Needless to say, the place erupted. Jobs handily won the bet, and 1984 was the beginning of the Super Bowl as the advertising medium we know today. We had figured out a way to get the product into the spot without putting the product into the spot.

FUNNIEST JOKE YOU KNOW (But keep it clean): A guy moves up to a remote section of Alaska to open a liquor store. He's been there six months and hasn't really met anyone, least of all a woman, and he's very lonely. One night, he hears a knock on his door. He opens it up, and there before him is a wild-eyed, bearded grizzled old mountain man.

"Howdy, friend. My name is Chester, and I'm yer neighbor. I'd like to invite you to a Christmas party."

"That sounds great," replies the man.

"Well, I have to warn ya, there's gonna be a lot of heavy drinkin'."
"That's OK" the man says. "I own a liquor store, and I know a thing or two about drinking."

"Well, there's gonna be a lot of fightin', cause that's just how we do things in Alaska."

"I'm an ex-Marine. I think I can take care of myself," the man replied.

"And there's gonna be some pretty kinky sex."

"Well," the man said, "I've been here for six months all by myself, so that sounds OK to me. What should I wear to this party?"

"Well," the old mountain man said, "It don't matter much, cause it's just gonna be you and me."

BACKGROUND: Marking the ten-year anniversary of the death of Southern California artist John Paul Jones (1924-1999), Cal State Fullerton Main Art Gallery Director Mike McGee has organized the most ambitious and inclusive retrospective to date of a lifetime of artwork by this nationally recognized artist. The exhibition John Paul Jones: A Retrospective includes more than 100 prints, paintings and sculptures, requiring two separate venues in order to exhibit such a large body of artwork concurrently: the Main Art Gallery at Cal State Fullerton and the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion at Orange Coast College.

John Paul Jones was widely exhibited and celebrated as an artist in the 1950s, 60s and 70s—both internationally and in Southern California. He was also acknowledged as the founder of the printmaking programs at UCLA and at UCI. By the 1960s, Jones was recognized as one of the pioneers of the renaissance in American printmaking spearheaded by Mauricio Lasansky with whom he studied at the University of Iowa. Always known as an “artist’s artist,” he was one of the stars of the early Los Angeles contemporary art scene. He was given his first, major solo exhibition in 1963 at the Brooklyn Museum and a retrospective at the Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles in 1984. Despite such acclaim, Jones is astonishingly little remembered today. This retrospective exhibition and accompanying publication will give definition to his remarkable career as a printmaker, painter and sculptor and more clearly define Jones’s contribution to American Art.

Jones’s artwork appears in over 50 public art collections and museums in the United States and other countries; these include the Brooklyn Museum, Hirshhorn Museum (Washington, D.C.), National Museum (London), Des Moines Art Center (Des Moines, Iowa) and Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven, Connecticut). During his lifetime he had more than 40 one-person exhibitions in major museum and art centers and his artwork was exhibited in over 100 important group exhibitions worldwide. The artist was also the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including Guggenheim Fellowship (1960-61), two Tamarind Fellowships (1962 and 1980) and a Spanish Government Fellowship (1963).

A 144-page catalog will accompany the exhibition with essays by curator Mike McGee and Susan Landauer, author of The Not-so-still Life: A Century of California Painting and Sculpture (2003) and Elmer Bischoff: The Ethics of Paint (2001) and contributing writer for Art of Engagement: Visual Politics in California and Beyond (2006). The publication will also include a transcribed interview with June Wayne, founder of the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. A panel discussion is scheduled in conjunction with the exhibition, moderated by Mike McGee and including panelists familiar with various aspects of John Paul Jones’s life and art. At the same time we have been working hard on Mel's Hole we have also been working with the artist Richard Turner on an exhibition and publication due to open on November 1st though December 21st !

Richard is amazing and this show has been in development for a couple years. We are so proud that we are working with his and bringing this project to the public.

The publication is 98 pages and full of color photos, images of sculptures, paintings and features essays by Richard Turner, Scarlet Cheng and Holly Myers.

Ryan DiDonato is at it again designing a lush book that will be a must have for your library.

You can pick up a current copy of Art Forum magazine and find Jeffrey Vallance's exhibition Relics and Reliquaries on the cover. Lower right hand corner. Inside the exhibition was listed as one of 2007's best. Congrats to Jeffrey! The upcoming book titled Relics and Reliquaries will be complete by the first week of February and will include installations image from Grand Central Art Center, Margo Leavin Gallery and De Vleeshal in the Netherlands. The book is going to be epic and highlight all the relics and stories form Jeffrey's life.

Holiday Beyond the Gallery

I met Betty Martin at my son and her grandson's school when she approached me and explained that she thought that I could help her realize a dream this holiday season. I was unsure what she had in mind but she went on to explain that she was an artist of sorts. Well, she did not call herself an artist but I have work with so many over the years that seeing the way her eyes flashed when she spoke about her passion for Christmas and Victorian design I assumed she must have a creative spirit.

She invited me to her home and asked if I might photograph her Victorian Christmas and help send her message to the press. Betty explained that for many years she had been decorating her home for Christmas in the most elaborate of Victorian design. She spoke about her passion and the ritual she undertakes each year to realize her vision. She had been doing this for more than 15 years and never had she received press coverage for her amazing holiday feat. She wanted to not only share the holiday spirit with her family and friends this year, but she wanted to share her joy for the holidays with the entire world. She wanted everyone all the way to Croatia and beyond to share her Christmas cheer.

I decide to investigate Betty’s world and help her because she peaked my curiosity.

Today I went out with Amy Caterina and we photographed Betty. I am submitting Betty's wish to the press and we will see if she gets published. But even if she does not I want her holiday wish to go out to the world. Happy Holiday to all.

P.S. Betty's favorite objects in her collection are her 50-year-old glass ornaments that she purchased for 25 cents, her glass mushroom ornaments and her nativity under the tree. She is now in her early 70’s and as she put it, “ I am active and like to do it all myself.” She explained to me how she climbs up and down a ladder hanging ornaments from her tree, going along editing and changing her mind until it is just right.

Just as Goya's prints drew on the prints of the French printer Jacques Callot for their inspiration (a sort of Victorian Post-Modernism), Sandow Birk now draws on Callot to create a series of prints commenting on the debaucheries of warfare in our times. Using Callot's images as a starting point and casting their epic compositions in both America and in the ravaged landscape of Iraq, Birk's prints depict the course of war and its aftereffects.

Sandow Birk, a native of Southern California, examines social issues, including inner city violence, graffiti, politics, travel, prisons, surfing and skateboarding in his explosive energetic and vibrant paintings. Having a lengthy exhibition history, Birk was a recipient of an NEA International Travel Grant to Mexico City in 1995, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996, and a Fulbright Fellowship to Rio de Janeiro in 1997. In 1999 he was awarded a Getty Fellowship for painting, followed by a City of Los Angeles (COLA) Fellowship in 2001. He has also worked on film projects, such as Dante’s Inferno, which has been featured at several international film festivals in 2006-07. Select collections include San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Harvard University Art Museums, and San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. Many thanks to those who voted for CSUF Grand Central Art Center this year and honored us with the best of 2007 listings. We work hard to bring great exhibitions and events to the public. I appreciate this as a vote of confidence that we are doing good work. I want to thank all my staff... Dennis, Tracey and Alyssa, Matt, Jenny, Hiromi, Savio, Eric and our many valuable volunteers, the Forum Board and all the public who visits the space and supports our programming. I would also like ot thank all the many artists we have worked with. They have made this place a powerhouse and we appreciate all thier trust and hard work. We have been in Santa Ana for 8 1/2 year and we are still going strong. Looking forward to 2008.

Grand Central Press, Santa Ana and HuiPress, Maui are currently publishing a 96 page book for the artist Sandow Birk. The publication features wood block prints from the series titled, Depravities of War by Sandow Birk. Prints by Jacques Callot are also featured. Essays by Darius A. Spieth, Paul Mullowney, Marilyn Vierra, Graham Larkin and Catherine Clark will be featured. The publication will be released in October 2007.

Newly re-launched Ovation TV, the television network dedicated to the fine arts, is producing a one-hour art documentary featuring a wide range of artists today. This special, ”Art or Not,” will be a view inside the art world in America, and confirmation that visual art is a vital part of society. Among the featured artists segments, will be noted gallery owners, curators, art critics and writers, as well as avid fans & response from everyday people who have no particular connection to art. Each segment will be an active, engaging look at the way today's featured artists & art aficionados talk and think about art and the current state of art in America.

The exhibition Drawn to Gravity points to a curiosity of ideas and experimentation, triggered by the direct process of drawing. Urban environments inspire Jennifer Celio’s meticulously rendered graphite drawings on panel. Celio illustrates not only the passing of time but also a process of change. Zachary Kleyn’s new drawings and sculptures question specific ways in which we navigate through life. The drawings, transparent and opaque, geometric and organic, do not follow normal rules of nature but instead act as metaphors to link disparate images and ideas. Kleyn will also exhibit a selection of new sculptures tangibly depicting seemingly impossible circumstances. The inspiration for the intricate and multi-layered drawings of Naoe Suzuki comes from medical dictionaries, journals, textbooks and catalogs. In her current work, Suzuki references art history, religious iconography, fashion and plant forms. These diverse and vague influences are pushed together to form quirky, yet delicate and poetic compositions.

CSUF’s SPRING DANCE THEATRE showcases a variety of dance styles from modern dance, to classical ballet, and a fusion of both. With pieces from the renowned choreographer José Limón, young student choreographers (Maria Hontalas, Joshua Romero, Crystal Barrientos, Bradley Beakes and Tiffany Telles), and faculty choreographers (Robin E. Johnson, Courtney Ozovek and Muriel Joyce), SPRING DANCE THEATRE captures many different moods of human expression. After a summer spent at Otis College of Art and Design on a special scholarship Esperanza Lopez is make more work at GCAC. She is also going to have some work she created at Otis highlighted at their upcoming fashion show event. We all came to see the college a few weeks ago and were very impressed with the summer program and the exhibitions at the Ben Maltz Gallery. Thanks to all at Otis and the sponsors of Esperanza's scholarship. It was a great summer!

Tania Mouraud to arrive for residency at GCAC

French artist Tania Mouraud will be our guest at GCAC starting October 18th 2006. She will be here visiting the area and making some installation magic in the GCAC Main Gallery in November. Dustin Wagner... a hot young designer from CSUF will be working on a book project featuring some of the artists works. He is another designer to watch out for and with an essay by Peter Frank this should be another not to miss exhibition and publishing project.

Dustin Wagner also designed the soon to be installed Artist Village banners. See the image above! The Neighborhood will be looking much better very soon.

Savio is also slated to design the upcoming book Exorb for Laurie Hassold. Exorb will also feature an essay by Tyler Stalling, curator at the Laguna Art Museum.

PROGRESS: In Search of the American Esthetic is an exhibition that features photographs, video projections, audio and ephemera documenting artists Michael Davis and Stephen Moore’s cross-country trip by car from California to New York in 1970 and their subsequent trip traveling the same route in reversing, form New York to California, in 2005.

It was California in the late 60’s. Pop and Minimal dominated the art scene. During one tediously long seminar, Cal State Fullerton art students Davis and Moore decided that it was time to experience what they were theorizing, not secondhand, but in the flesh. They determined to see cutting-edge artwork and meet as many artists, curators, and gallery owners as possible. In addition, they would chronicle their travel experience via film and conceptual artworks.

What began as a graduate research project evolved into a 3,140 mile road trip documenting the icons and sounds of roadside America in 1970; a mixed-media observation that served as prolog to the destination itself.

According to Davis:

Traversing America, we would witness a changing and transformed landscape, a representation of progress.

If progress is the notion that society moves forward, advancing toward a more desirable form, it seemed to us in 1970 that this concept was in essence paradoxical. These contradictions framed our viewpoint in the creation of a time-lapse film and the compilation of hundreds of images shot on the road.

PROGRESS 2005 is a mirror image of that drive. Departing from the Big Apple, Davis and Moore traced the original route, closing the loop that they began 35 years ago. Along the way, they attempted to translate the jargon, political and visual, that has since proliferated along the nation's highways.

Their documentation tracks the globalization of the American economy, and its impact on the landscape. Present-day technology replaced film and hand-written journals with digital video and web updates. At the end of their journey, they perused the West Coast art scene.

They journeyed not so much to a destination but toward a point of view, asking: What has changed about roadside America in the years since the original trip? And how does that affect the way they—and other travelers—see the country?

They encountered the transition from homespun signage to corporate logo, from unique abode to mass housing, and confronted the transformation of not just the American landscape but the American Dream as well.

The artists are both Alumni of California State University Fullerton. Michael Davis is based in San Pedro, California and Stephen Moore is based in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Subsequent to the exhibition, Grand Central Press will also release a publication documenting the project.

Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum

The Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum has been built on the grounds of the Fullerton Arboretum and has been designed along the lines of a packing house. The interior of the building is divided into four sections: Nikkei, Educational, Pioneer, Transportation and Geography. This museum is a must see and a amazing addition to the already wonderous Fullerton Arboretum.

The museum is highlighting the history, development, and impact of agriculture, as well as the contributions of the Japanese American community, in the growth of Orange County. This introductory exhibit is a peek into upcoming planned exhibitions and will be open throughout the summer.

The first major exhibit is planned for September 06 and will focus on the Nikkei. Sowing Dreams, Cultivating Lives will journey with the early Japanese immigrants to California, and follow their stories as they establish permanent communities in Orange County by marrying, raising families, founding schools and social groups, and above all, cultivating the land.

The second exhibit will open in January 07 and will focus on the Pioneer families. A Determined Lot: Orange County Pioneer Farmers will chart the paths taken by the pioneer families who settled in the county and consider their motives, motivations, and incentives as they farmed the land and created innovations that changed the landscape.

The third upcoming exhibit will open in April 07 and will deal with transportation, marketing, water issues, and geography. From Farmer to Market will follow produce from the fields and orchards to the packing houses and markets. The committed labor of a diverse group of Orange County residents combined with improvements, inventions, and discoveries in transportation, science, and marketing to modernize the farming industry and make California an agricultural giant.

Some hot things are happening in the basement of the CSUF Grand Central Art Center. Santa Ana High students in collaboration with guest artist in resident Chrissie Orr and CSUF grad student and instructor Tracey Duran re-creating themselves in the form of larger than life portable personal murals. Many of the new mixed media pieces will be featured this first Saturday (May 6. 2006) on the promenade in front of GCAC. Also, Friday May 5th KTLA will be in the Artists Village filming a spot to highlight Cinco de Mayo and the artistic vibe of the village. I hope they feature these artworks. They are amazing and a must see!
